G7 & G8 BIOMIMICRY: NATURE AT WORK"Biomimicry is … the conscious emulation of life’s genius." Janine Benyus (author of "Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature"). Biomimicry is the concept of taking something found in Nature and using it as a model for pretty much anything. Grade 7 and 8 became inventors this unit and were asked to think of a problem that needs solving, and then research an animal/plant that solves a similar problem. Alternatively, they could start with a plant or animal that inspires them to create a new invention. Not only did they design and build a solution or product but they also tested their design.

G10 CHEMISTRY TOYSG11 UNLIKELY energy sourcesThere is no need to explain how the use of fossil fuels is not sustainable. Most of the alternative energy sources are pretty much tested and presented for use, but political will has prevented its widespread use.
In order to make the political will happen, G11 physics students are tasked to come up with a novel idea to produce useful energy from an unlikely source, that is, something that is not already being used as an energy source, but could be used. From random noise to toilet flushes and maybe just your door opening -- they will find a way to generate electricity you need to charge your phone... or at least, give you light. |
